 I use to get upset about getting up so much during the night to pee. After reading this I'm glad I do. Between drinking lots of H2O at the gym & during the day & night I just guessed it was JUST the amount of my intake; however, there's a more scientific reason :

Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). 
 When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the kidneys remove the water because it is easier.

"Legendary singer Linda Ronstadt, 67, told AARP today that she “can’t sing a note” because she suffers from Parkinson’s disease.

 Diagnosed eight months ago, Ronstadt began to show symptoms as long as eight years ago. But she ascribed her inability to sing to a tick bite (“my health has never recovered since then”), and believed the shaking in her hands resulted from shoulder surgery. 

In a wide-ranging interview with AARP’s music writer Alanna Nash to be published on aarp.org next week, Ronstadt revealed how she discovered that “there was something wrong” with her voice.

“I couldn’t sing,” she told Nash, “and I couldn’t figure out why. I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had. And it didn’t occur to me to go to a neurologist. I think I’ve had it for seven or eight years already, because of the symptoms that I’ve had. Then I had a shoulder operation, so I thought that’s why my hands were trembling.

“Parkinson’s is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, ‘Oh, you have Parkinson’s disease,’ I was completely shocked. I wouldn’t have suspected that in a million, billion years.

“No one can sing with Parkinson’s disease,” Ronstadt said. “No matter how hard you try.”
Ronstadt walks with the aid of poles when on uneven ground, and uses a wheelchair when she travels.

Although Ronstadt’s new memoir, Simple Dreams, will appear on September 17, it does not discuss her diagnosis, or the loss of her voice.

Ronstadt, who dated high profile men such as California Gov. Jerry Brown and George Lucas, helped shape the folk-rock music scene of the late 1960s and early 1970s. She started as lead singer of the Stone Poneys, then went on to achieve fame as a solo performer. She has earned 11 Grammy Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, and an Emmy..."

(CNN) -- "Victoria Byers did not drink alcohol. She did not abuse drugs. But when she was a teenager in foster care, several times a month, she would board a van at her group home and go to rehab.

Byers couldn't figure out why she had to take drug tests and sit in group therapy sessions on addiction at So Cal Health Services, a clinic tucked in an office park in Riverside, California.

"And I told them, you know, 'Why should I be here? I have no drug issue,' " said Byers, now a slow-to-smile 22-year-old.

The director of Byers' group home confirmed Byers was clean but said she sent all six girls under her care to the clinic because she didn't have enough staff to separate those with substance abuse problems.

 The arrangement was strange. It was also a scam.

So Cal Health Services was ripping off taxpayers, part of a pattern of fraud by rehabilitation clinics that collect government funding to help the poor and addicted, a yearlong investigation by The Center for Investigative Reporting and CNN has found. The investigation, which included undercover surveillance and stakeouts, uncovered a rehab racket that continues to this day.

Thousands of pages of government records and dozens of interviews with counselors, patients and regulators reveal a widespread scheme to bilk the state's Medicaid system, the nation's largest. Witnesses to the fraud laid out its inner workings in minute detail, some speaking of it publicly for the first time.

In the underbelly of the Drug Medi-Cal program, clinics pad client rolls by diagnosing people like Byers with addictions they don't have. They round up mentally ill residents from board-and-care homes to sit in therapy sessions they can't follow. They lure patients in from the street by handing out cash, cigarettes and snacks. They have patients sign in for days they aren't there.

One Inglewood clinic fabricated notes and billed for "ghost clients" who never came in. They couldn't show up, a counselor discovered: Some were behind bars; one was dead.

Even caught red-handed, operators have polished techniques to ward off official scrutiny and keep the money flowing. One Los Angeles County clinic director lodged a complaint against a government auditor, and another called on a local lawmaker for help. In both cases, it worked..."

CBS NEWS:
The Supreme Court's ruling that human genes cannot be patented has been met with excitement from doctors over the implications for patient health. Other experts, however, questioned whether there will be a widespread impact.

The high court's ruling threw out some patents previously held by Myriad Genetics Inc., a Salt Lake City-based company that had patented a genetic test for the BRCA gene that's associated with increased risks for breast and ovarian cancers.

"We hold that a naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated," said Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote the court's unanimous decision.

The court, however, also ruled that synthetic DNA -- called cDNA -- could be patented by a company.

The full decision of Association for Molecular Pathology et al. v. Myriad Genetics,Inc., et. al can be found on the Supreme Court's website.

 Judge: Morning-after pill for all ages

The FDA has asked the maker of the single-pill emergency contraceptive known as Plan B One-Step to submit a new request for over-the-counter approval, the letter states. The agency "will approve it without delay" once filed.

But the FDA won't allow girls to obtain a two-pill version of the drug, saying there is less safety data available on the use of the product by younger adolescents.

The Obama administration will allow minors to obtain one form of the emergency contraception known as the "morning-after pill," dropping its appeal of a judge's order requiring it to be sold over the counter.

U.S. District Judge Edward Korman had ruled in April that the government must allow over-the-counter sales, and a federal appeals court rejected the administration's challenge to that ruling last week. The administration had been criticized by some women's rights groups for trying to stop contraception sales to underage females.

In a Monday letter to Korman, Justice Department attorneys said the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services had agreed to make the single-pill version of the drug available "without age or point-of-sale restrictions."

"It is the government's understanding that this course of action fully complies with the Court's judgment in this action," the letter states. "Once the Court confirms that the government's understanding is correct, the government intends to file with the Circuit Court notice that it is voluntarily withdrawing its appeal in this matter."

The FDA announced two years ago there would be no limits on over-the-counter sales of morning-after pills. But Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius unilaterally ordered the age and prescription restrictions, prompting lawsuits.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, praised the decision.

"After far too long of a delay, science has prevailed," said Murray, who called emergency contraception "an essential part of women's basic health care."

"Today's move by the administration means the safety and effectiveness of Plan B, not politics, will dictate access," she said.

And the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America said the decision "ends a nearly decade-long battle over lowering barriers to this important medication."

"Health experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics and many others agree that emergency contraception is safe and effective for women of all ages," Ilyse Hogue, president of the rights group, said in a statement hailing the move. "We're happy to see this long overdue victory for science over politics."

"For thousands of years, coffee has been one of the two or three most popular beverages on earth. But it’s only recently that scientists are figuring out that the drink has notable health benefits. In one large-scale epidemiological study from last year, researchers primarily at the National Cancer Institute parsed health information from more than 400,000 volunteers, ages 50 to 71, who were free of major diseases at the study’s start in 1995.

By 2008, more than 50,000 of the participants had died. But men who reported drinking two or three cups of coffee a day were 10 percent less likely to have died than those who didn’t drink coffee, while women drinking the same amount had 13 percent less risk of dying during the study. It’s not clear exactly what coffee had to do with their longevity, but the correlation is striking.

Other recent studies have linked moderate coffee drinking — the equivalent of three or four 5-ounce cups of coffee a day or a single venti-size Starbucks — with more specific advantages: a reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, basal cell carcinoma (the most common skin cancer), prostate cancer, oral cancer and breast cancer recurrence..."

"City Attorney Dennis Herrera is probing allegations that Nevada had a long-standing policy of sending mentally ill patients to California on buses. 

City Attorney Dennis Herrera isn’t buying Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval’s assurance that his state only discharged and dumped a single patient from its Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital here in California.

After all, The Sacramento Bee reported that Rawson-Neal bought bus tickets for more than 1,500 mentally ill patients over the past five years, and that around one-third of those buses went to California, including 36 to San Francisco. But Nevada officials have maintained that nearly all of those discharges were appropriate..."

"Two staff members who violated discharge policies at a Las Vegas psychiatric hospital were fired Monday and three others are being disciplined following an investigation into busing patients to other states, the governor's office and agency officials said Monday.

The Department of Health and Human Services said another four people who were involved no longer work at Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital.

Gov. Brian Sandoval earlier in the day announced the firings and said his administration is looking for a national expert in the mental health field to review all the state's facilities "to ensure best practices are being implemented and followed."

The moves come in the wake of an investigative series by the Sacramento Bee after James F. Brown, who suffered from schizophrenia and depression, was given a one-way bus ticket in February to Sacramento, Calif., where he knew no one. The newspaper then reviewed bus ticket receipts dating to 2008 and found that the hospital, part of the Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services, had transported about 1,500 patients to other states. Roughly 500 went to California..."

VETERANS GET HEPATITIS AND HIV FROM INSULIN INJECTIONS--SAD

Insulin injection errors may have exposed veterans to viruses--VERY SAD

"(CNN) -- Hundreds of veterans may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV because of medical oversights that allowed insulin pens to be used on more than one patient at a Veterans Administration hospital in Buffalo, New York, according to a memo from the Department of Veterans Affairs to Congress.

"On November 1, 2012, officials at the (Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System) reported that while conducting pharmacy inspection rounds on the inpatient units, they discovered that insulin pens intended for individual patient use were found in the supply drawer of the medication carts without a patient label on them," said the memo, obtained by CNN through the office of U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins, D-New York. "Although the disposable needles were changed each time it was used, the insulin pens intended for individual patient use may have been used on more than one patient."

"There is a very small chance that some patients could have been exposed to the hepatitis B virus, the hepatitis C virus, or HIV, based on practices identified at the facility," the congressional memo states. "(The health system) determined that all veterans who were prescribed the insulin pen during an inpatient stay from October 19, 2010, to November 1, 2012, should be notified."

The veterans' health care system has found that 716 patients may have been affected during this time period, Jim Blue, regional director of the VA's Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, told CNN. "Veterans and their families will have an opportunity to speak with a nurse who will answer questions they may have and assist with managing followup care," Blue said..."

WAS NATALIE WOOD KILLED? NEW EVIDENCE

"The actress' death certificate was amended back in August 2012, with the cause of death being changed from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors." But information as to why the change was made was not released until Monday, when the corner's office put out a 10-page supplement to the actress' autopsy report.

The supplement notes that "bruises especially in the upper extremities appeared fresh and could have occurred before (Wood) entered the water." It also says that "the location of the bruises, the multiplicity of the bruises, lack of head trauma, or facial bruising support bruising having occurred prior to the entry into the water..."

A few days ago, a person was recharging his mobile phone at home.

Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the charging Instrument still connected to the outlet.

After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the floor with a heavy thud. As you can see, the phone actually exploded.

His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.

He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet! If you are charging the cell phone and a call comes in, unplug it from the charger and outlet.

MARIJAUNA DISPENSARY in NJ --The First

In roughly a month,  Montclair, NJ will be the first city to have a medical marijuana dispensary called THE GREENLEAF COMPASSION CENTER on Bloomfield Ave.

Residents are afraid this will become the logo--lolol

 

From personal experience I know Montclair is a wonderful town due to its balanced  views on society (same-sex marriage, etc). Now one more step to put this "where the suburb meets the city" place on the map.

Starting today, August 9, 2012... New Jersey residents with certain illnesses are allowed to apply for medical marijuana ID cards. They are valid for 2 yrs.  Some copious paperwork is involved in the registration process as well.

There are strong arguments from NJ residents on both sides of this issue. Those who claim they need it see this as a lot of red tape, while others are completely opposed to this medical option.

HEPATITIS C "SERIAL INFECTOR" INDICTED

"David Kwiatkowski, a former lab technician at Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire, had allegedly been stealing the Fentanyl syringes intended for patients, injecting his own arm and then refilling those empty syringes with another liquid-like saline, according to a statement from the United States Attorney's Office in New Hampshire.

Since Kwiatkowski tested positive for Hepatitis C in June 2010, he passed it on to the hospital patients who were injected with his used, saline-filled syringes, according to the affidavit. 

The New Hampshire hospital lab technician indicted last week for infecting 31 people with Hepatitis C might have infected "tens of thousands" of patients in at least 13 hospitals, ABC News has learned..."

His diagnostic test earned him first prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest pre-college science research competition.
He said modestly, “I’m incredibly excited. It’s like the Olympics of science fairs. It’s just amazing to be here—even if I don’t get a prize.” Well, Jack Andraka did win, receiving about $100,000 in prize money ($75,000 from the grand prize and over $25,000 from other smaller prizes).  The high school freshman said he will put the money toward college tuition.

ANDRAKA beat out billion-dollar pharmaceutical companies with his diagnostic test. Perhaps as a young person with no experience, he hadn’t yet learned what everyone else in the industry “knew couldn’t be done.”

I saw the video of his winning and it moved me like few similar videos have.

NEW JERSEY: VIRUS & ODOR SICKNESS

About 40 students at Rider University, last February, were taken to hospitals for treatment after an outbreak of what authorities believe is the norovirus. From the school's campus in Lawrenceville,  students were brought to nearby hospitals.

 Cut flowers have tentatively been identified as the cause of a  strange odor inside the Monnouth County Courthouse that forced its evacuation on Friday sending 17 people  to the hospital.

The odor began wafting through the Freehold courthouse at the end of the day. All those affected were treated in a special decontamination tent set up outside of CentraState Medical Center in Freehold and sent home.

 Everyone has two copies of the human genome: One inherited from their biological mother and one from the biological father. With technology that's being used for genetic sequencing these days, it's not possible to say which variants on the chromosome you inherited from which parent.

 The complexity comes, of course, from the ethical issues that arise concerning parents who would selectively abort fetuses that are predestined for certain conditions.
The technology worries medical ethicist Harriet Washington, who fears parents could use genome sequencing to predict and selectively abort children that don't meet certain standards - not just for diseases, but for things like hair and eye color..."

Few things blow my mind as the information I just received & researched, the practice of "EUGENICS": GET RID OF THE UNDESIRABLES!

This practice was in place as recent as the 1970's.
Some survivors are still alive.
The targeted victims were usually poor, black, epileptic, person's with low I.Q., etc.
It was not a backroom practice (as abortion) but endorsed & encouraged by the intelligentsia of our time. Heroes & heroins of our day such as Margaret Sanger. Funding came for the most reputable of institutions: such as the CARNEGIE & ROCKEFELLA FOUNDATIONS.

WHAT!!!???

The NAZI'S actually mimicked our practice to use in their sterilization procedures during WWII.

Some of the victims were as young as 9 yrs old.

 A survivor of "eugenics" was on the show "ANDERSON" a few days ago. She was an African-American 14 yrs old poor woman when this happened.

Leale's long-lost report of efforts to help the mortally wounded president, written just hours after his death, was discovered in a box at the National Archives late last month.
