A documentary about how a much-derided music actually changed the world. Between 1969 and 1979 disco sound tracked gay liberation, foregrounded female desire in the age of feminism and led to the birth of modern club culture as we know it today, before taking the world by storm; with contributions from Deney Terrio, Nile Rogers, Earl Young, Nicky Siano, David Mancuso, Robin Gibb, Kathy Sledge, Edmund White, Ian Schrager and Rollerena, just to name a few.

I never knew this existed; produced by the BBC.

Personally my disco experiences started in the New Jersey parties and straight bars in 1972 and peaked in the 1980's. This pop explosion just morphed later on to house music, tribal and other danceable pop music.

My first gay disco was " THE ROUND TABLE" in Midtown NYC-I was 15 years old (yay fake ID's).
It was also the first time I saw men in drag.

Of course the top NYC discos we frequented in the late 70's and 80's (and we'd later refer to them as dance clubs to sound cooler; silly us.) were: "The Gallery",  "Studio 54" , "Xenon". "Infinity", "12 WEST", "The Barefoot Boy", "Flamingo", "The Anvil", "Les Mouches", "Ice Palace 57", "the Paradise Garage"and the epitome of all dance clubs, "THE SAINT".

Other cities had comparable dance clubs: Los Angeles had "Studio One"; South Florida had "COPA", "Salvation" and "Backstreet"; Atlanta had "Backstreet" as well.

And Philadelphia brought a unique sound the world embraced. It took soul, R&B and Motown to create timeless, danceable sounds still influencing artists today.

While the Salsoul Orchestra created the hybrid of soul, Latin and disco.

Any dancer worth his self respect danced the Latin hustle-not the "Saturday Night Fever" more Anglo style. This movie & soundtrack by The Bee Gees took disco to the mainstream (as Madonna's song "Vogue" did for voguing; another established underground phenom-watch "Paris is Burning" to explore its genesis).

(And screw the backlash of "DISCO SUCKS" in July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago--most of the music THEY were listening to REALLY SUCKED...it was pure homophobia & racism..hate at its most vile !)

I just realized that DWTS new "celebrity", Candance Cameron- Bure, is the sister of homophobic actor, Kirk Cameron (yea the guy that also believes the Garden of Eden existed). He has publicly denounced same sex marriage and what he believes "normal" is since he states that he gets all his information-literally- from the Bible.

Last night Candance made a big deal about all aspects of DWTS and her belief in Jesus Christ.

She wants to call the shots on what dance, what to wear & what her partner can wear all in the name of JESUS---give me a freakin' break!!!

I've had enough of their holier than thou Bible thumping !

Why the hell did she agree to participate in DWTS anyway?

I hate to tell her but there are gay people there and the show is known for it's provocative dances, partners and costumes.

WTF ?

 It's only week 2 and already she pitted the show against Jesus Christ- REALLY !!!?

GET OUT! Who needs your preachy self?

You will not get one vote outta me...

Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson is under attack for saying in the January issue of GQ  that “homosexual offenders” will not “inherit the Kingdom of God” and stating in graphic terms his preference for heterosexual sex over homosexual sex.

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong,” he told GQ. “Sin becomes fine.” He also paraphrased Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

“We never, ever judge someone on who’s going to heaven, hell. That’s the Almighty’s job,” Robertson continued. “We just love ’em, give ’em the good news about Jesus—whether they’re homosexuals, drunks, terrorists. We let God sort ’em out later, you see what I’m saying?”

 A&E hasn’t commented on how Robertson’s comments could impact the future of the hit series. However, in 2007, Dog the Bounty Hunter came under fire for using racial slurs, and A&E halted production of his series. And celebrity chef Paula Deen lost the support of several major sponsors after she admitted to using racial slurs earlier this year.

Adam Cardinal’s wedded life began happily in New Hampshire, where same-sex marriages are legal. It went sour three years later in Florida, where they are not. 

Elizabeth F. Schwartz of Miami Beach, a lawyer representing a client seeking a same-sex divorce.

Mr. Cardinal, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, separated from his husband several months ago. But the couple cannot get a divorce because, in the eyes of Florida officials, their marriage does not exist. 

Returning to New Hampshire to sever the bond is not an option either. Although marrying can be accomplished with a brief visit there, a divorce requires residency in the state for at least a year. 

Mr. Cardinal cannot remarry — to do so would make him a bigamist in states like Massachusetts or New York that recognize his previous nuptials. And although he and his husband did not combine their assets, the lack of an official document certifying the end of their marriage carries financial risks. 

“I didn’t realize this could potentially be an issue, that we couldn’t divorce when we wanted to,” Mr. Cardinal said. “That was really upsetting.” 

The Supreme Court’s ruling last week striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act has been hailed as a victory for gay couples who wish to marry. But it has also offered new hope to people like Mr. Cardinal who are stuck in a marriage they cannot dissolve. 

 Said Ms. Schwartz, the lawyer in Miami Beach, “If you’re going to let people into a relationship, you’ve got to let them get out.”

Huckabee is understandably distraught that he’d live to see the day when some people started to see LGBT people as equals. It is troubling. More and more people are losing their god-given right to discriminate.

Hints that the Holy See contained a network of gay clergy surfaced last year in reports about a series of embarrassing leaks to Italian journalists.

The "Vatileaks" scandal factored in Pope Emeritus Benedict XIV's shocking decision to resign earlier this year, according to some church experts, as it impressed upon the 86-year-old pontiff that the modern papacy requires a vigorous and watchful presence.

Francis' enigmatic comments came during a meeting Sunday with CLAR, the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Religious Men and Women, who head Catholic communities of priests, sisters and monks. The Chilean website Reflection and Liberation, which focuses on liberation theology, first reported Francis’ remarks.


Gay and lesbian Catholic groups did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

 Thousands Rally in NYC in a Defiant and Spirited Response to Anti-Gay Murder (by "GAY MARRIAGE USA")

"An estimated crowd of more than two thousand this evening marched and rallied in New York City in response to a spate of anti-gay crimes in Manhattan in recent weeks.

The wave of anti-gay violence came to a head on Saturday May 18th with the murder of Marc Carson who was shot dead in Greenwhich Vilage. The suspect in that fatal incident has been charged with a hate crime.

Members of the LGBT community and their allies assembled outside the LGBT Center of NYC on West 13th Street.

 By the time the march began the crowd had swelled to well beyond initial
expectations.

Led by representatives of the LGBT Center, the Anti-Violence Project, relatives of Marc Cason, religious leaders, Edie Windsor (DOMA plaintiff), and elected officials, the group marched towards the scene of Carson’s death at West 8th Street and 6th Avenue.

 Participants waved signs and chanted along the march route. A large number of police were in attendance.

Inspiring and upliftying speeches were given by representatives form a range of LGBT organizations and other community groups. The aunt of Marc Arson spoke on behalf of Marc’s family and accepted the condolences offered by those in attendance. Leaders from LGBT affirming churches provided input from a religious perspective. Nick Porto and Kevin Atkins, attacked in an unsolved anti-gay assault on May 5th, also spoke.

Much to the irritation of a number of rally attendees, no elected official spoke in relation to the recent rise in anti-gay violence in the city. The event ended with a minute’s silence to honor the death of Marc Carson..."

A gay couple was attacked early Tuesday in SoHo and a man was beaten in the East Village, hours after thousands marched to protest the killing of a gay man and several other bias attacks that have shaken the community, officials said.

Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Tuesday that "New York City has zero tolerance for intolerance."

"We are a place that celebrates diversity ... hate crimes like these are an offense against all we stand for as a city, and we will do everything possible to stop them," Bloomberg added.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the two men in the SoHo attack were walking on Broadway between Prince and Houston streets at about 5 a.m. when two men started yelling anti-gay remarks in English and Spanish. The victims, 41 and 42, are Hispanic.

The men were both punched, and one suffered an eye injury, sources said.

TODAY (MAY 22, 2013) I FIND OUT ONE MORE VIOLENT, HOMOPHOBIC BASHING IN THE EAST VILLAGE :Gornell Roman was charged Wednesday with assault and aggravated harassment after a hate crime against former Philadelphia promoter Dan Contarino.  The attack was one of two hate crimes authorities announced Tuesday following the killing of a gay man over the weekend.

Many people in the LGBT community feel betrayed. I think this was a bold way for Kurek to really get to know a community he had so many prejudices against. I have read many social scientists study a group or groups in similar ways (i.e. the homeless) and they all come out (no pun intended) a more enlightened person. I think if we ALL tried walking in the shoes of those who scare us, or at the very least , confuse us, we would be more united. I applaud his efforts to understand. I also applaud him for being so newly in tune w/ the struggles of the LGBT community that he is donating a portion of his book to them.

 Frank Ocean, an R&B singer who is part of the hip hop collective Odd Future and who has also written songs for Justin Bieber, John Legend and Beyoncé, came out on his blog last night.

MOVIE: "J.EDGAR"

J. Edgar Hoover, powerful head of the FBI for nearly 50 years, looks back on his professional and personal life: pioneer, closet homosexual, shady, rude, egotistical, unrelenting and all in all not a very nice person.He did, however, think of areas in forensics (fingerprinting,etc) and intelligence which we still implement today. A smart man with little heart and a twisted soul!

Director: Clint Eastwood 

 

 This was, in my opinion, too ambitious a fete for Eastwood. In the past he has done some good stuff when directing other movies (excellent job in "Gran Torino" , pretty good job with "Million Dollar Baby" et. al.) However,  here he seems lost. He makes uninteresting and predictable choices and worse of all casting, who I usually like, Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover. DiCaprio is full of histrionics. He over-acts the part and makes it a caricature. It was annoying after a while which made it hard to focus on the historical issues presented. I'm usually upset that a director does not develop a character, here Eastwood over-kills it.

What could have been a great movie-after all, Hoover is one of the most controversial people in the 20th century- felt like a history lesson, except the class ran too long. If he had edited many of the parts with Hoover's mother and sped up other areas, it might have worked.

I did appreciate the honesty of Eastwood -not pussy footing around the most controversial detail regarding Hoover's homosexual reputation yet closeted existence. His long time companion (Clyde Tolson) was played to perfection by Armie Hammer, in  the best performance of his career to date. Their love story was well done.

 Naomi Watts was excellent too. Judi Dench was good.

Overall  the entire movie  was pretty boring.

Eastwood did capture all the periods beautifully in clothing, hair & make-up. Armie Hammer is unrecognizable as an old man--WOW!

What was interesting to me was that Eastwood, in his real life, is a staunch conservative yet the movie serves a very liberal slant. I could have sworn, if the movie was better directed, that it was an Oliver Stone project. That was the most mind blowing part of watching this movie.

 Good for you Eastwood!

I think the "BIOGRAPHY CHANNEL" may have a less tedious version of Hoover's life. I will check that out soon.

Now that it's a rental -and you can watch it in sections while not fear paying $13.00 for this- I rate it 2.5 stars of out 5---your call...

HIV IMPORTANT OPTIMISTIC NEWS--"CYCLODEXTRIN"

Anderson Cooper, on his daily talk show, "ANDERSON", had  a show entitled "Renegade Moms" (you can watch the episode online),  the big deal was about "pink slime" found in ground beef; that was fine & dandy, but what really made my mind blow up with optimism was the mom who took matters into her own hands to battle her twins' disease ( they suffer from what is commonly known as "childhood Alzheimer") and discovered that by infusing  "cyclodextrin" directly to the brain this sugary substance made her daughters significantly better; by chance she  found it can also benefit HIV patients.

I do not mean to minimize  any of the moms whether it was the one championing "pink slime" or the tragic death of the other mom who lost her daughters to car rental negligence, but I wish they had focused a bit more on such a promising and easily available substance such as cyclodextrin with it's multiple effects. Anderson should have elaborated on this fact or even had a show on all new advances on HIV/AIDS, maybe he will. so far the show is a home run
