But it’s only recently that scientists are figuring out that the drink has notable health benefits. In one large-scale epidemiological study from last year, researchers primarily at the National Cancer Institute parsed health information from more than 400,000 volunteers, ages 50 to 71, who were free of major diseases at the study’s start in 1995.
By 2008, more than 50,000 of the participants had died. But men who reported drinking two or three cups of coffee a day were 10 percent less likely to have died than those who didn’t drink coffee, while women drinking the same amount had 13 percent less risk of dying during the study. It’s not clear exactly what coffee had to do with their longevity, but the correlation is striking.
Other recent studies have linked moderate coffee drinking — the equivalent of three or four 5-ounce cups of coffee a day or a single venti-size Starbucks — with more specific advantages: a reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, basal cell carcinoma (the most common skin cancer), prostate cancer, oral cancer and breast cancer recurrence..."

THE PASSING OF ESTHER WILLIAMS REMINDS ME OF SO MANY HAPPY TIMES.
FOR INSTANCE, THE FIRST TIME I HEARD "BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE" WAS IN HER MOVIE, "NEPTUNE'S DAUGHTER" (TO THIS DAY IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE ROMANTIC COMEDIES). THE MOVIE OFFERS GLAMOUR, COMEDY , LOVE AND UNBELIEVABLE SWIMMING CHOREOGRAPHY. MY SISTER & I STILL QUOTE IT.
AROUND THE TIME OF THE 1994 GAY GAMES & CULTURAL EVENTS IV IN NYC-THE FIRST TIME I DARED TO DO STANDUP- ESTHER WILLIAMS INAUGURATED THE POOL/SPORTS ARENA USED FOR THE SWIMMING MEETS/COMPETITIONS. IT'S WHERE I FIRST SAW GREG LOUGANIS FLY IN THE AIR AND MAKE REPEATED, PERFECT DIVES AND MY HIGHLY SKILLED PERSONAL FRIENDS TOOK HOME THE GOLD & SILVER MEDALS, (TODD & MIKE RESPECTIVELY).
NOT LONG AGO I WAS GLUED TO HER AUTOBIOGRAPHY "THE MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID" . SHE REVEALED A LOT: HER ABUSIVE EX HUSBAND , LORENZO LAMAS; HER AFFAIR; DABBLING IN LSD; OLYMPIC CONTENDER; BUSINESS WOMAN AND HER CROSS DRESSING BOYFRIEND, JEFF CHANDLER, AMONG OTHER TIDBITS.
ESTHER WILLIAMS HAD A MESMERIZING BEAUTY WITH A NON-TRADITIONAL WIDER SHOULDER PHYSIQUE! SHE WORKED AS A MODEL FOR I.MAGNIN THEN PARLAYED THAT SENSE OF STYLE & BEAUTY TO HOLLYWOOD.
THE CAMERA EMBRACED HER BEAUTY AND CAPTURED UNHEARD OF SWIMMING STUNTS PRODUCED IN HOLLYWOOD'S GOLDEN AGE.

'Outrageous': Verizon reportedly forced to turn over customers' phone records (It says the order will be declassified in April 2038...)

The four-page order, which The Guardian published on its website
Wednesday, requires the communications giant to turn over "originating
and terminating" telephone numbers as well as the location, time and
duration of the calls -- and demands that the order be kept secret.
If genuine, it gives the
NSA blanket access to the records of millions of Verizon customers'
domestic and foreign phone calls made between April 25, when the order
was signed, and July 19, when it expires.
While the report
infuriated people across the country -- former Vice President Al Gore
called the idea "obscenely outrageous" -- a senior official in the Obama
administration defended the idea of such an order early Thursday.
Report: U.S. phone records go to the NSA
Without acknowledging
whether the order exists, the administration official emphasized that
such an order does not include collection of "the content of any
communications or the name of any subscriber.
It relates exclusively to
metadata, such as a telephone number or the length of a call."
"Information of the sort
described in the Guardian article has been a critical tool in protecting
the nation from terrorist threats to the United States, as it allows
counter terrorism personnel to discover whether known or suspected
terrorists have been in contact with other persons who may be engaged in
terrorist activities, particularly people located inside the United
States," the unnamed official said in a written statement to media.
The official also
insisted that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act authorizes
intelligence collection. Activities "are subject to strict controls and
procedures under oversight of the Department of Justice, the Office of
the Director of National Intelligence and the FISA Court, to ensure that
they comply with the Constitution and laws of the United States and
appropriately protect privacy and civil liberties."
That response was unlikely to quell the quickly growing criticism.
"While I cannot
corroborate the details of this particular report, this sort of
wide scale surveillance should concern all of us and is the kind of
government overreach I've said Americans would find shocking," said Sen.
Mark Udall, D-Colorado, who serves on the Senate Intelligence
Committee.
Gore, in a tweet, also criticized the move.
"In the digital era,
privacy must be a priority. Is it just me, or is secret blanket
surveillance obscenely outrageous?" he said.
Verizon spokesman Edward McFadden declined to comment on the report.
According to the
document published by The Guardian, Judge Roger Vinson of the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court signed a "secondary order"
granting an FBI request for access to the records.
The FBI did not respond to a CNN request for comment. The NSA told CNN it will respond "as soon as we can."
The order does not say why the request was made, but it bans the government and Verizon from making the contents public.

MICHELLE OBAMA & A GAME CHANGER FOR LGBTQ?
Lesbian activist kicked out of fundraiser for disrupting First Lady’s speech
WASHINGTON — First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday threatened to walk out on a private Democratic fundraiser after a lesbian activist repeatedly interrupted her speech to demand that President Obama sign an executive order to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
According to the White House, Mrs. Obama “left the lectern” and confronted Sturtz, telling her, “One of the things that I don’t do well is this,” she said to applause from most of the guests. “Do you understand?”
The pool press report quoted Mrs. Obama as saying, “Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.”
The White House told LGBTQ Nation that after the First Lady threatened to leave, the audience asked her to remain and Sturtz was instead escorted out of the room.
Sturtz told The Washington Post that she was stunned by Mrs. Obama’s response.
