Chrysler said it would not conduct a safety recall to fix fuel leaks on its Jeep models after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requested that the company recall 2.7 million vehicles.

NHTSA sent Chrysler a 13-page report Monday detailing why the automaker's fuel tank design on 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Jeep Libertys was flawed, citing fire-related fatalities in these vehicles dating back to 1996.

"We believe NHTSA’s initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the agency to resolve this disagreement," the company said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

"The U.S. government today called for a major recall of nearly 3 million Chrysler sport utility vehicles based on what its experts say is a deadly fire hazard that has left an estimated 51 people dead.

“This will be the biggest recall [in terms of impact] since the Ford Pinto,” said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, which requested a U.S. probe into the SUVs in 2010.

The automaker is refusing, however, saying that its vehicles are safe and not defective.

The government says that initial findings show a safety defect in older model Jeeps — the Jeep Grand Cherokee from 1993 to 2004, and the Jeep Liberty 2002 to 2007.

The government also says the fuel tanks are vulnerable to rupture in rear-end collisions.

According to the government, the problem is the fuel tank location, just behind the rear axle and slightly below the bumper. In later models of the Grand Cherokee and Liberty — in 2005 and ’07, respectively — the tank was moved but Chrysler said it was for design reasons..."

HOBOKEN LOSES "MAXWELL'S"

Opened August 1978
Renovated July 26, 1998

Maxwell's, a Hoboken rock institution, to close at the end of July...

WTF?

I remember as a kid I wasn't allowed to cross into Hoboken because it was, according to my mom, full of trash. I gotta say the population was sketchy at best. Later, when I was old enough to drive I noticed that "trash" was turning to trendy and the rest is history. Today, I think I'm considered the trash -lol.

(FROM NJ.COM NEWS ONLINE):

Maxwell's, the Hoboken corner restaurant and rock club with an international reputation, is closing its doors at the end of July.

The lease to Maxwell's, which has been at the heart of the rock scene in Hudson County for decades, is up at the end of July. But the decision to close the club at 1039 Washington St. isn't the landlord's.
"We were offered a renewal with rates that weren't necessarily onerous," says Todd Abramson, the club's booking agent and co-owner.

"But after much thought, given the changing nature of Hoboken and the difficulties of trying to run a business in this town, we decided it was time."

Maxwell's, says Abramson, will invite back some old friends to finish its remarkable run.

"On July 31, I think we're going to go out the way we came in — with the band 'a'." a, which featured members of the Bongos and Glenn Morrow, who'd later found Hoboken's Bar/None Records, was the first act to ever take the stage in the restaurant's back room. (The Bongos will also perform on July 31.)

CHRISTIE'S PLAN TO REPLACE LAUTENBERG

Chris Christie Calls Special Election To Fill Frank Lautenberg Seat

(IT'S NOT THAT I HATE THIS DEMOCRATIC WAY OF THINKING BUT MAYBE CHRISTIE SHOULD TAKE ALL THAT SPECIAL ELECTION'S FUND-$11.9 TO $24 MILLION-TO SAVE DECAYING BRIDGES, AT RISK SCHOOLS, SANDY RELIEF, ETC.

WE COULD HAVE VOTED ON THAT IDEA TODAY IN THE PRIMARIES...DUH!)

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced that a October special election will be held to fill the seat of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg.

Saying that an elected senator is needed quickly, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Tuesday called for a special election in October to fill the seat of Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D), who died on Monday.

Christie announced that a special primary election will be held on Aug. 13 with an Oct. 16 general election to fill the seat, ending a debate over conflicting state laws and the possibility that the Senate election would be the same day as the November 2013 election. A nonpartisan analysis puts the cost for the special primary and general election at almost $24 million.

“This is about guaranteeing the people of New Jersey a choice and a voice in Washington," Christie said.

Christie said that politics did not factor into the decision to call the October special election.

But scheduling the special election for November would have set up the possibility of popular Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D), a potential Democratic Senate candidate, running statewide at the same time that Christie faces presumptive Democratic gubernatorial nominee Barbara Buono (D) for the governorship.

Christie is leading Buono by 30 points in recent polls, but the presence of the popular Booker on the ballot could have helped Buono and helped Democratic state legislative candidates.
“I will not play politics with this," Christie said, stressing that New Jersey needed an elected senator for the next 18 months.

Christie did not name an interim senator on Tuesday, saying that he is still weighing his options. He said he would allow his appointee to run for election this year if desired. The October election will fill the remainder of Lautenberg's term, which expires in January 2015.

"I will not give you any indication of who is on the list, what their gender is, what their political party is," Christie said.

Christie's decision ends a debate over conflicts in state law that indicates the election could be held in November 2013 or November 2014. The law provides Christie the option of scheduling a special election if he deems it necessary, which he did. Democrats planned litigation in the event that Christie decided to let his appointee serve the remainder of Lautenberg's term.

Christie said that legal considerations did not play a role, saying that he wanted the elected senator in office as soon as possible.

On Monday, the nonpartisan New Jersey Office of Legislative Services authored an opinion that it would cost $11.9 million for the August primary and $11.9 million for the October election. Christie said that the state would cover those costs. Democrats have been critical of the decision to spend close to $24 million for an election when it could be held the same day as the regularly scheduled November election.

“I don’t care," Christie said when asked about the cost. "You can’t put a price tag on having an elected official in the United States Senate..."

VINEGAR CAN SAVE WOMEN'S LIVES ???

The study results are a "really big deal," because something so low-tech can help so many, says Dr. Bruce Roth, a cancer expert from Washington University in St. Louis and ASCO spokesman. "You can buy a lot of vinegar for $100,000, " says Roth.

The fact that local women who received training administered the test is also "a big public health benefit," says ACSO president Dr. Sandra Swain.

The study was funded by National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health.
The results were striking.

Almost 90% of the women participated in the trial (in the United States, overall adult participation in clinical trials is 3%). Shastri says they found a 31% reduction in cancer deaths by using this vinegar test, suggesting that if implemented nationwide, it could prevent more than 22,000 cervical cancer deaths each year.

This type of screening program could also be implemented in other developing countries and, Shastri says, possibly reduce the overall number of cervical cancer deaths each year by an estimated 72,000.

Unfortunately we have no cervical cancer screening program in India," where it's the number-one cancer killer among women, says lead study author Dr. Surendra Srinivas Shastri, "mainly because pap smear screening is not feasible." Shastri attributes lack of a resources, laboratory infrastructure and trained medical staff. A pap smear requires growing the cells from a sample and having a pathologist analyze them.

As a result, Shastri says, the cervical cancer incidence and mortality in India alone contributes to 30% of the global burden of this disease.

They borrowed a tried-and-true method called visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), where the cervix is swabbed with a 4% vinegar solution.   This is something doctors in poor and rich countries do as part of a procedure called a colposcopy.

Gynecologists in the United States use this type of test for visualization in a colposcopy, says Dr. Carol Aghajanian, a gynecological expert from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and ASCO spokeswoman. "What's new here is that it's being used as a screening tool."
Local women were trained for four weeks on how to administer the test, since doctors and nurses are in short supply in many areas of India.

Within just one minute, the person administering the test - using the naked eye and a light - can see if there are abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix; abnormal cells turn white, because the acid in the vinegar makes protein in the nucleus of the abnormal cells coagulate and become easily visible.
The fact that results are available immediately rather waiting for

AIRLINES KICKS OFF 101 STUDENTS

A group of students from New York says they were unfairly kicked off an AirTran flight to Atlanta Monday.

School opens 'investigation' after airline kicks students off plane...

WHATTA YOU THINK?

By Morgan Winsor, CNN

New York (CNN) -- The dispute surrounding a student vacation flight from New York to Atlanta is getting uglier.

One hundred one students and eight chaperones were kicked off an early morning AirTran flight before its scheduled departure Monday. The controversy now pits the airline against an Orthodox Jewish high school.

"We take this matter seriously and have started our own investigation," said a statement released Tuesday by Rabbi Seth Linfield, executive director of the Yeshiva of Flatbush school. "Preliminarily, it does not appear that the action taken by the flight crew was justified."

From the airline's perspective, it sounds like a large-scale version of the parental "don't-make-me-turn-this-car-around" scenario.

Southwest, which owns AirTran, said the group of "non-compliant passengers" would not stay seated, and some were using their mobile devices after being asked not to.

When the students failed to comply with requests from the flight crew, including the captain, they were asked to leave the plane, delaying the AirTran flight for 45 minutes, said Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins.

Students and chaperones from the Brooklyn-based school said the flight crew overreacted to the teenagers who were looking forward to visiting Six Flags and rafting, among other activities.

"SALVATION ARMY": GAYS SHOULD DIE!

According to the Salvation Army, [gay parents] deserve death.

(DONATE TO GOODWILL, HOUSING WORKS OR YOUR LOCAL THRIFT STORE WHO ARE NOT HOMOPHOBIC)

THANK YOU: Joseph Miceli-Magnone and Jersey Leather

Ryan: According to the Salvation Army, [gay parents] deserve death. How do you respond to that, as part of your doctrine?
Craibe: Well, that’s a part of our belief system.
Ryan: So they should die.
Craibe: You know, we have an alignment to the Scriptures, but that’s our belief.
Ryan: You’re proposing in your doctrine that because these parents are gay, that they must die.
Craibe: Well, well, because that is part of our Christian doctrine –
Ryan: But how is that Christian? Shouldn’t it be about love?
Craibe: Well, the love that we would show is about that: consideration for all human beings to come to know salvation…
Ryan Or die…
Craibe: Well, yes.
Major Bruce Harmer, the Army’s Communications and Public Relations Secretary recently issued the following passage from the group’s FAQ:
The Salvation Army encompasses a diverse community with a wide range of opinions on human sexuality and other subjects. The senior leadership of The Salvation Army continues to reflect on Christian and Biblical tradition, and especially on the themes of justice and mercy, to further deepen the understandings of our own members and build a more healthy relationship with the GLBT community. We pledge to continue to offer services to all and to treat each person with dignity, respect and non-discrimination.

Please, don’t give us the non-apology apology, Major Harmer (how’s that for a fitting name?) We practically invented it. If you choose to believe the Major that the Salvation Army doesn’t hold any animus toward the LGBT community, that’s your choice. Me, I'm gonna donate my old shmatas to Goodwill.
