DARK SHADOW'S' BARNABAS DIES-87
Dark Shadows’ Jonathan Frid, The One And ONLY Barnabas Collins Passes Away At 87
"April 20, 2012
Jonathan Frid, best known for playing Barnabas
Collins in the 1960s original vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows”, has
died of natural causes in a hospital in his home town of Hamilton,
Ontario.Frid served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. After graduating from Hamilton’s McMaster University, he got a degree in directing at the Yale School of Drama and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.
Frid starred in various theater productions with illustrious actors including Katharine Hepburn. But it was his turn in “Dark Shadows” and its first feature film adaptation, “House of Dark Shadows,” that made him a commercial success and kept him busy throughout his career with reunions, fan events and dramatic readings.
At the height of his career twenty million people watch him perform his perform his love lorn vampire Barnabas Collins on the the show at its peak in 1969. His character was added to the failing soap opera in in 1967, a last ditch effort to save the show from cancellation, which it did and Frid stayed on until the end of its run in 1971
Frid who was gay, never married and is survived by a nephew, Donald Frid.
At Frid’s request, there will be no funeral and there and no memorial service"

GAY PIONEER SNUBBED for MEDAL OF HONOR
Frank Kameny, along with Harvey Milk is “one of the most significant figures’
in the American LGBT civil rights movement history. In 1957, Kameny
was dismissed from his position as an astronomer in the Army Map Service
in Washington, D.C. because of his homosexuality, leading him to begin
“a Herculean struggle with the American establishment” that would
“spearhead a new period of militancy in the homosexual rights movement
of the early 1960s”. Kameny later went on to co-founded the Mattachine
Society of Washington, DC, became the first openly gay candidate for the
United States Congress in 1973, and stayed actively involved and at the
forefront of the LGBT civil rights movement until his death last year
on October 11, 2011 at age 86.

GAY MAN CONVICTED OF SODOMY & EXECUTED
Though my focus is on human rights for the LGBT community in the US, it's still sad and unbelievable when a brother from another country gets killed for a natural act we take for granted at home (we're mainly fighting for legal rights here)...
This is VERY sad:
Reports via The Jerusalem Post are stating that a gay man was sentenced and hung last week for committing the crime of “sodomy” with another man in Iran.

DRUG? HAND SANITIZERS
Hand sanitizer: The new vodka for teens?
"There's a new trend among teens
looking for a buzz, doctors say, and it surrounds an unlikely household
item designed to keep us germ-free: ethanol-based hand sanitizer.
Teenagers are using it this stuff to get high, according to
health officials. Poison control centers nationwide say reports are on
the rise.
The big issue here is the alcohol content, says Dr. Robert J. Geller, a medical toxicologist and Emory University pediatrician.
He says these sanitizers "are actually products that are
60% ethanol which means they are 120 proof," and "if you drink 2 ounces
of it, it's like drinking 3 ounces of 80-proof tequila."

"THE HUNGER GAMES" (2012)
A well made movie for teenagers--not for people my age (I was elated I did not pay admission). It was still impactful since I can see the class distinction and other elements that warrant metaphors of not only class but government control, exploitation of our salacious nature as reality TV viewers, etc ( I could even see it paralleling the Holocaust's tragic course of events). But I didn't NEED this movie to explore those issues since I have so many time in my life w/ books, newspapers and interviews regarding the imbalance & injustice in our world. Additionally, there was so much CGI that I had a hard time trying to suspend the reality of unreality--if that make sense to you. It tried desperately to be a character driven story (which are my favorite kind) but failed at almost every turn.
So for the demographic it was intended it's a home-run-well #1 at the box office for three weeks is clear evidence of that...
As a cinephile what disturbed me the most was the director's poor choice regarding the opening scene --when you begin so farcical it is painfully hard to then care of genuine human emotions and unbearable issues of poverty and abuse. It has elements of comedy but the message was far from funny, in my opinion, so why preface the movie with overt comical images? It was a disconnect too way off base for the rest of the premise. The young actors are adequate and quite beautiful to look at and Woody Harrelson's talent was a pleasure to visually savor.
On a complete sidebar: were all the upper class gay-or should I rephrase that & say effeminate?

LOVED IT! FUNNY! PERFECT CAST! COLORFUL LOCATION!
This is great family entertainment!
I loved that it wasn't the 8-packed "Twilight"-esque actors we are so use to seeing in most movies nowadays; instead, it was elderly people in their own particular prime ready for the "now" experience. Impossible to really give the viewer too much back story since we are trying to get to where the 7 main characters are, the screenwriter & director still do a pretty damn good job for us to care about each & every one of them. The generation gap may exist but the human needs/hopes/dreams are transcended (fear not youngsters, young love is also explored).
The beauty of this film is the message. If you are an older viewer you get immediately-as I did-if you are younger pay close attention so your life is fuller & ultimately happier.
GREAT LESSONS HERE...
Take the entire family.
Something for all.
As usual, Maggie Smith & Judi Dench steal the movie w/ colorful India as its backdrop.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) --
There is a new call for Congress to audit the Boy Scouts of America. At
issue is its child abuse policy. It follows the court ordered release of
what had been confidential files detailing more than a thousand alleged
cases of sexual abuse involving scout leaders.
They're called the perversion files, which cover sexual
abuse cases from the 1960s to the 1980s, including about two dozen from
the Bay Area. The confidential files reveal the names of 1,200 suspected
pedophiles..They have not stated their sexual orientation but I get a sneaking suspicion they are of the Sandusky ilk--frustrated older, straight men.. (my opinion)

Taking the method too far?
Some fear unions, but they provide the experts in each field
So sad that lack of supervision may have caused his death:
"The cause of death was
not immediately available. Photos taken by a local photographer show the
final moments of the play as Klimeck, in the role of Judas Iscariot,
hangs himself as described in the Bible in the book of Matthew.
Klimeck wore a harness under his robe during the play, according to CNN affiliate TV Record.
Police investigator Jose
Victor Bassetti told the news station this was the third year the local
fire department let the theater company borrow the harness for the play
and that Klimeck was not supervised because he knew how to use the
equipment. The harness, along with the rope used in the play, are now
being analyzed at the Criminal Institute of Sorocaba..."

"BULLY" (2012)--the movie
Although "BULLY" (2001), based on actual events
dealt with this pandemic problem, it was, after all, dramatized, allowing
the viewer an opportunity for detachment.. In this latest documentary "BULLY" by Lee Hirsch (2012) one is
placed in a more voyeuristic position; one feels the pain of both the victims & their families more passionately.
If you're a parent this documentary is invaluable, the dialogue is inescapable.. No one famous here, which makes the audience feel "a part of" (the solution or the problem).
Even a childless person , such as myself, remembers being bullied himself due to his sexual orientation- although not crippled by my past, the scars are forever. I was a teacher for 20 years and remember the importance of establishing respect within the environment I worked. Many a lunch time I would just watch from my window-from a purely sociological standpoint- how the kids would interact during their lunch period in the schoolyard. If I saw foul play. I would strongly address it with concrete reprimands and consequences (which was one of the most disturbing parts of this film-the negligence and apathy of the principal--sadly, she knew she was being filmed and this was her BEST behavior? WOW!) Standing up for the under dog has been a way of life for me, my interest in considering becoming a lawyer or consumer advocate can surely be traced to the mistreatment and injustice I once received (and , at times still feel-especially in the political/ religious arena).
The most heartbreaking comment, which also resonated the loudest for this viewer, was when a bible-thumping mother claims ( I'm paraphrasing here) their church taught all the evils about homosexuality and she taught them as well, till she sobs, "until it became personal". EXACTLY!
Anderson Cooper recently had most of the children and their families on his afternoon show "Anderson" . They address their lives today (can I just say Kelby would be a great person for Gloria Steinem to pass her torch to, a young girl remarkably way beyond her years in depth of understanding). There was a beauty of watching the camaraderie amongst the victims on the show which was touching and perhaps healing (always recommended by the mental health profession when tragedy hits one's life ).
Although the topic is a powerful one and this documentary is worth watching , I'm not sure Hirsch was the best person for the job. I know it was not a musical but a subject I am so passionate about should not make me doze off. More was needed, though I'm not sure what that was. I admire his diligence and bravery but I think his weakness is in balance. The rationale of the bully in never fully-if at all-explored.

Any Gays on the Titanic?
"Were there LGBT people on the
Titanic? Of course there were, even if you accept the social
constructionist notion that queer people were different in 1912 than we
are today. Moreover, in 1912 neither the victims nor the survivors of
the disaster were likely to be “out” in the modern sense of the word.
But homosexually-inclined men and women already existed in 1912, on the
Titanic and elsewhere. Jack Fritscher, author of the gayrotic novella
Titanic: The Untold Tale of Gay Passengers and Crew (Palm Drive
Publishing), reckoned that “if, according to Kinsey, one out of six
ordinary men is gay, 225 gay men died. If two out of six in the travel
industry are gay, 450 gay men died, making Titanic an overlooked but
essential chapter in gay history.” Since men were more likely to go
down with the ship, the gay male casualties were undoubtedly higher than
most...
Beyond my curiosity, I bow my head in reverence to all those who lost their lives and the families who had to endure the loss & grieving of their loved ones.
April 15th is a sad, historic day which acknowledges the tragedy of the maiden and only voyage of the magnificent ship, The Titanic-100 years ago.

University was released in full on Sean Hannity's Fox News show on
Wednesday night—and unlike the late conservative provocateur's other
video hits, this one
appears to be a bit of a dud.
ME: Obama is as kind, eloquent & fair then as he is today--go ahead & watch it, it only reveals an intelligent man w/ heart & purpose w/out being vile (as Fox news & many of it's allies are). Obama in the video is asking for fairness and unity and HOPE--remember that? I am still proud to have voted for him & will vote for him again, PROUDLY!
Movie: "We Need to Talk About Kevin"
Movie: "WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN"--provocative & suspenseful--Kevin makes the girl in "The Bad Seed" look like Snow White--I was impressed with how in sync technical, talent & everything else works...I went w/ no expectations & actually enjoyed the ride.
Joan Rivers & Barbra Streisand lovers?
Joan Rivers and Barbra Streisand Once Swapped Spit (great piece of trivia)
Posted on June 18, 2008
Joan Rivers tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that she and Barbra
Streisand played lovers in a 1959 theatre production of the off-off
Broadway play “Driftwood” because the director couldn’t find a leading
man --the whole article is funny
Rita Hayworth's Grandson Dies
Very Sad. The dashing young man — who graduated from Fordham University with a degree in psychology — was the son of Hayworth’s daughter, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, who lives off Central Park West, and Greek shipping heir Basil Embiricos. A source said his mom rushed to his apartment as soon as she heard the news. A descendant of the Aga Khan, an Islamic spiritual leader, Andrew Embiricos made head...
OPRAH & GAGA ABOUT LOVE
2012-
I envisioned as a time for the world to raise its consciousness --the
turmoil of 2011 was an indicator that unless we unify in the spirit of
love, compassion & kindness the reality of a better world with
sensible outcomes will elude us --today
when I saw "Oprah's Next
Chapter", featuring Lady Gaga, it was clear others feel the same way.
Celebrity can often breed selfishness/shallowness but can also enlighten
issues dormant or fearful to tackle --I applaud , loudly, those who use
it for the benefit of mankind, especially without quoting the Bible,
just reaching into their own souls...http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/19/lady-gaga-oprah-interview_n_1362775.html
HOMOPHOBIA, AGAIN
GENEVA
(AP) — The U.N. human rights office is urging Chile to pass new laws
against hate crimes and discrimination after the killing of a young gay
man found beaten with swastikas carved into his body.
Rupert
Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights,
says the "particularly abhorrent murder" of 24-year-old Daniel Zamudio,
who died Tuesday night, 25 days after he was attacked, demands news laws
against discrimination because of sexual orientation and gender
identity.

OH PLEASE, RICK SANTORUM
There's an old Hollywood saying, "If you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all"...Rick Santorum ended the presidential race--GOOD!
I think love and family are of the utmost importance in life, but to use a child for the reason to drop out of a race is pathetic. If Santorum knew he would win in PA., I'm guessing his whole motto would have been "I have got to do this for my daughter, to show strength and perseverance and that daddy is a fighter. I'm doing this for my daughter"
In reality, he knew he'd be embarrassed to lose in his home state--AGAIN. This was all about his ego-AGAIN.
--just sayin'
How conveniently these Republicans use their children (Palin, Bush, et al.)

GLORIA ESTEFAN ROCKS NYC
From Mark Schulte:
The evening of Friday, February 10, SPLASH bar in Manhattan was the place to be as the crowds eagerly awaited the arrival of Gloria Estefan, making a live appearance to celebrate the release of her new song "Hotel Nacional" & the debut of its music video. The place was already packed by 9:00 PM, even though Gloria was not due to appear until midnight. A lucky group of VIPs got to go past the velvet ropes at the back of the bar for a chance to meet Gloria in person. It was a Who's Who of the NYC GBLT nightlife world.
Gloria arrived promptly at the stroke of the witching hour & the crowds went ballistic, snapping photo after photo of the Cuban-American diva. Although Gloria is quite small in stature, she proved she has an enormous heart, being more than kind to her fans. At the annointed hour she took to the stage where she thanked everybody. She made a special acknowledgement of the GBLT community, saying that they were not only her first fans, but the best as well. She said that her music was being played in the Gay clubs long before it was heard anywhere else & credited the community with making her the star that she is today. She also commented on how she loves Gloria Estefan lookalike drag queens. Then she segued into the debut of the video, which can be described as a Latino take on "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Although her fans were a tad disappointed that she did not do a live performance, the energy was high & a magical night was had by all.

Néstor Almendros & "Days of Heaven"
MY NEW FIND FOR MY CUBAN /FILM BUff FRIENDS:
Néstor Almendros, ASC (30 October 1930 – 4 March 1992) was an Oscar
winning (DAYS OF HEAVEN) Spanish cinematographer. One of the highest
appraised contemporary cinematographer-he will always be remembered as "a
cinematographer of absolute truth...a true master of light"...
SHE DRANK THE KOOL-AID
SHE DRANK THE KOOL-AID or is it the classic Republican Stockholm Syndrome some seem to possess? :
Today I almost fell off my chair when South Carolina Governor Nikki
Haley (The female, Indian-American Governor) said women today are NOT talking about birth control but instead are talking about the
economy--WTF??? Again, WTF???? Had she said they are not ONLY talking
about birth control I may have not reacted so strongly--what women does
she talk to--robots or drag queens??? (no offense to drag queens ).
These clueless Republicans continue to blow my freakin' mind...wow!
"SHAME"----the movie
MOVIE: "SHAME"--very provocative! instead of a movie with answers, it's a movie full of questions and alternative conclusions--this was mostly a good thing (at times I felt we deserved some back story). The acting is top-notch! New York is captured realistically--the glamour & the grime. After seeing "all" of Michael Fassbender (my new celebrity crush) I love him the more! 3.5 stars (out of 5).
NYC Gay Therapist Suicide Surprises Me
R I P--so sad NYC therapist Bob Bergeron passed, in a horrible way, on New Year's Eve, in NYC. He obviously helped so many but failed at taking his own advice. It's staggering: a 2002 survey by researchers at the University of California, found that 12 percent of urban gay and bisexual men have attempted suicide in their lifetime, a rate three times higher than the overall rate for American adult males...God bless his soul
Being an avid researcher of all things New York, it really surprised me that this is old news to many, yet ALARMINGLY new news to me!
