GINGER PARADE? I'M MOVING TO SCOTLAND!

Participants in the Ginger Pride Parade 2013 (© Scott Campbell/Getty Images)

First Ginger Pride March blazes trail on streets of Edinburgh:

Countless gasps and shrieks were no doubt suppressed in Edinburgh Saturday when scores of redheads met during the Fringe Festival for a Ginger Pride Walk. The event was organized by fiery-haired Canadian comedian Shawn Hitchins, and featured smiling pale folks parading through the streets holding signs that read "It gets redder" and "Ginger and Proud." "Even although it isn't a real word, gingerism exists and bullying exists and you can’t deny that kids are being subjected to taunts or being bullied in schools just for having red hair," Hitchins said. His Scotland vacation must have been a breath of fresh air; Scotland is lousy with gingers, home to a fifth of the world's redheads.

(BULLIED? WTF??THEY ROCK!!!)

NYPD agrees to stop bullying redheads on the force

4/22/2013
It ain't easy being a redhead. But if you've got fiery locks and have endured years of high school bullying, then bag yourself a job in the NYPD, because hair-related harassment won't be tolerated there anymore. According to sources, NYPD officers have just been told that making fun of those with red hair is a form of discrimination, because redheads are often of Irish or Scottish descent. Justine Lisser of the EEOC in Washington, D.C., explains, "It's an innocuous-seeming criteria, but if it has a 'disparate impact' on a certain racial group, red hair could be considered the basis of discrimination." The force clarified its stance after a number of officers allegedly complained about hair harassment

UNITED NATIONS & EQUALITY FOR LGBTQ

UN Launches Unprecedented Global Campaign for LGBT Equality

 (FINALLY!)

In another sign of changing times, the United Nations today announced an unprecedented global public education campaign designed to raise awareness of homophobic violence and discrimination and promote greater respect for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people everywhere.

Launching the Free & Equal campaign at a press event in Cape Town, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and South African Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron at her side, the UN's human rights chief Navi Pillay said that there was an urgent need for a concerted public education effort to tackle homophobia at its roots. "We know from experience that eradicating discrimination requires more than just changes in laws and policies. It takes a change in people's hearts and minds as well," she said.

With this campaign, the UN hopes to accelerate a change in attitudes toward LGBT people by provoking -- and helping to inform -- millions of conversations around the world and across the ideological spectrum.

In addition to plain language fact sheets and articles, Free & Equal will generate a stream of creative content, including short videos, graphics and testimony, all designed to dispel common misconceptions and negative stereotypes and encourage people to look at the lives of LGBT people through the eyes of LGBT people themselves, as well as those of their parents, siblings and children.

To kick off this theme of family, the campaign previewed "The Story of a Mother From Brazil," a short film telling the story of Edith Modesto, the mother of a young gay man, who shares her journey toward accepting her son.

The campaign's message is threefold:
  • Human rights really are universal. Everyone, whoever they are and wherever they live, is entitled to the same rights -- and that includes LGBT people. Violence and discrimination against LGBT people, which has been documented in all regions, is unacceptable and illegal under international human rights law.
  • LGBT people are just that: people. The United Nations wants to encourage those who have never thought much about this issue, and who might live in parts of the world where sexuality and gender identity are taboo topics, to learn about the lives of LGBT people, their hopes and their fears, and become better informed about the human rights challenges they face.
  • Things are getting better. For all the bad news and the inevitable setbacks, the long-term trends are positive. Attitudes are shifting in many parts of the world, and many governments are gradually stepping forward and implementing necessary reforms. Changes that would have seemed impossible 10 or 20 years ago are taking root, and as they do, the balance of opinion both within and among countries is steadily tilting in favor of equality for LGBT people.

COMPUTER "MOUSE" INVENTOR DIES-88

Doug Engelbart Dead: Inventor Of The Computer Mouse Dies At 88

By By MICHAEL LIEDTKE
(HUFFINGTON POST)

"... One of the biggest advances was the mouse, which he developed in the 1960s and patented in 1970. At the time, it was a wooden shell covering two metal wheels: an X-Y position indicator for a display system. (MOUSE)

The notion of operating the inside of a computer with a tool on the outside was way ahead of its time when Engelbart began working on it.

The mouse didn't become commercially available until 1984, with the released of Apple's then-revolutionary Macintosh, a prelude to future breakthroughs such as the iPhone and iPad.

All of those devices were conceived by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died in October 2011. Although Jobs' contributions to personal technology are far better known, Engelbart left an indelible mark, too..."

( IN 1966 HE CREATED THE "X-Y INDICATOR" OR "MOUSE" BUT MADE VERY LITTLE MONEY ON IT.  WHEN THE MOUSE REALLY TOOK OFF HIS 17 YR OLD PATENT HAD EXPIRED--SAD.
I'M USING ONE NOW & BILLIONS ARE TOO; BTW, HE WASN'T FOND OF APPLYING THE WORD MOUSE TO THIS COMPONENT BUT IT STUCK. HE WAS A VISIONARY WHO SAID WE WERE AT THE BOTTOM OF A TECHNOLOGICAL MOUNTAIN & "LET'S GET ON WITH IT!" HE ROARED)

"Engelbart dazzled the industry at a San Francisco computer conference in 1968.
Working from his house with a homemade modem, he used his lab's elaborate new online system to illustrate his ideas to the audience, while his staff linked in from the lab. It was the first public demonstration of the mouse and video teleconferencing, and it prompted a standing ovation.

In 1997, Engelbart won a most lucrative award for American inventors, the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize. Three years later, President Bill Clinton bestowed Engelbart with the National Medal of Technology "for creating the foundations of personal computing"

Remembering the UpStairs Lounge: The U.S.A.’s Largest LGBT Massacre Happened 40 Years Ago Today (by Terry Firma)

The 24th of June in 1973 was a Sunday. For New Orleans’ gay community, it was the last day of national Pride Weekend, as well as the fourth anniversary of 1969′s Stonewall uprising

You couldn’t really have an open celebration of those events — in ’73, anti-gay slurs, discrimination, and even violence were still as common as sin — but the revelers had few concerns. They had their own gathering spots in the sweltering city, places where people tended to leave them be, including a second-floor bar on the corner of Iberville and Chartres Street called the UpStairs Lounge.

That Sunday, dozens of members of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), the nation’s first gay church, founded in Los Angeles in 1969, got together there for drinks and conversation. It seems to have been an amiable group. The atmosphere was welcoming enough that two gay brothers, Eddie and Jim Warren, even brought their mom, Inez, and proudly introduced her to the other patrons. Beer flowed. Laughter filled the room.

Just before 8:00p, the doorbell rang insistently. To answer it, you had to unlock a steel door that opened onto a flight of stairs leading down to the ground floor.

Bartender Buddy Rasmussen, expecting a taxi driver, asked his friend Luther Boggs to let the man in. Perhaps Boggs, after he pulled the door open, had just enough time to smell the Ronsonol lighter fluid that the attacker of the UpStairs Lounge had sprayed on the steps. In the next instant, he found himself in unimaginable pain as the fireball exploded, pushing upward and into the bar.The ensuing 15 minutes were the most horrific that any of the 65 or so customers had ever endured — full of flames, smoke, panic, breaking glass, and screams.

MCC assistant pastor George “Mitch” Mitchell escaped, but soon returned to try to rescue his boyfriend, Louis Broussard. Both died in the fire, their bodies clinging together in death, like a scene from the aftermath of Pompeii.

Metal bars on the UpStairs Lounge windows, meant to keep people from falling out, were just 14 inches apart; while some managed to squeeze through and jump, others got stuck. That’s how the MCC’s pastor, Rev. Bill Larson, died, screaming, “Oh, God, no!” as the flames charred his flesh. When police and firefighters surveyed and began clearing the scene, they left Larson fused to the window frame until the next morning.

This news photo is among the most indelible I’ve ever seen:

Thirty-two people lost their lives that Sunday 40 years ago — Luther Boggs, Inez Warren, and Warren’s sons among them.
Homophobia being what it was, several families declined to claim the bodies and one church after another refused to bury or memorialize the dead. Three victims were never identified or claimed, and were interred at the local potter’s field.

When the Rev. William Richardson, of St. George’s Episcopal Church, agreed to hold a small prayer service for the victims, about 80 people attended, but many more complained about Richardson to Iveson Noland, the Episcopalian bishop of New Orleans. Noland reportedly rebuked Richardson for his kindness, and the latter received volumes of hate mail.

The UpStairs Lounge arson was the deadliest fire in New Orleans history and the largest massacre of gay people ever in the U.S. Yet it didn’t make much of an impact news-wise. The few respectable news organizations that deigned to cover the tragedy made little of the fact that the majority of the victims had been gay, while talk-radio hosts tended to take a jocular or sneering tone: What do we bury them in? Fruit jars, sniggered one, on the air, only a day after the massacre.

Other, smaller disasters resulted in City Hall press conferences or statements of condolence from the governor, but no civil authorities publicly spoke out about the fire, other than to mumble about needed improvements to the city’s fire code.

Continuing this pattern of neglect, the New Orleans police department appeared lackluster about the investigation (the officers involved denied it). The detectives wouldn’t even acknowledge that it was an arson case, saying the cause of the fire was of “undetermined origin.”

No one was ever charged with the crime, although an itinerant troublemaker with known mental problems, Rogder Dale Nunez, is said to have claimed responsibility multiple times. Nunez, a sometime visitor to the UpStairs Lounge, committed suicide in 1974.

11 YR. OLD EXPOSES SCHOOL LUNCHES

11-Year-Old Zachary Maxwell's Hidden Camera Documentary Exposes School Lunch

(ABC NEWS)

"It's the documentary that audiences and film critics are eating up.

In a covert six-month mission to expose the inside world of school lunches, 11-year-old Zachary Maxwell made "Yuck: A 4th Grader's Documentary About School Lunch" when he was a fourth-grader at a New York City public school.

Armed with hidden cameras, the precocious filmmaker went undercover to document dozens of lunches he was served at school.

During Zachary's investigation, he compared descriptions of lunch items on the school-provided menu with secretly recorded video of what he was actually being served."It sounded like it was coming from the finest restaurant, but what we were actually getting served, it wasn't too good," Zachary told ABC News.

His 19-minute movie has already been featured at film festivals this year, and will be shown in the Manhattan Film Festival June 21, something the now fifth-grader is quite proud of..." (read more online & see documentary)

IMPORTANT MEDICAL NEWS & THE LAW-URGENT !

THE SUPREME COURT RULES NO ONE COMPANY CAN OWN OUR GENES.
MYRIAD WAS UNDER FIRE & FINALLY THE COURT HEARD THE CASE & DECIDED, RIGHTFULLY IN MY OPINION..

AFTER ANGELINA JOLIE MADE NEWS ABOUT THE CANCER GENE (BRCA) SHE HAD WHICH LEAD TO HER MASTECTOMY , MANY WOMEN, UNDERSTANDABLY, WANTED TO BE TESTED BUT BECAUSE "MYRIAD" HAD DISCOVERED THE GENE THEY WANTED A MONOPOLY ON THE TEST FOR IT--APPROXIMATE COST? $3000.

AFTER TODAY'S RULING OTHER COMPANIES CAN NOW OFFER THE TEST, LOWERING THE COSTS DRAMATICALLY! YAY!

NOW THIS IS MAJOR GOOD NEWS:

FROM NOW ON, FOR BOTH MEN & WOMEN ALIKE, ACCORDING TO THE SUPREME COURT, NO ONE CAN OWN ANY PART OF OUR BODIES, REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE RESEARCH TOOK PLACE (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF A SYNTHETIC DNA).

THIS IS MONUMENTAL!!!
___________________________________________________________
  (ACLU):

"Much of the industry will be a winner in this," according to attorney Sandra Park, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union legal team that fought against Myriad. "There are many companies that want to offer genetic testing on patented genes. They've been unable to do that so far because of these types of patents."
______________________________________________________________

CBS NEWS:
The Supreme Court's ruling that human genes cannot be patented has been met with excitement from doctors over the implications for patient health. Other experts, however, questioned whether there will be a widespread impact.

The high court's ruling threw out some patents previously held by Myriad Genetics Inc., a Salt Lake City-based company that had patented a genetic test for the BRCA gene that's associated with increased risks for breast and ovarian cancers.

"We hold that a naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated," said Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote the court's unanimous decision.

The court, however, also ruled that synthetic DNA -- called cDNA -- could be patented by a company.

The full decision of Association for Molecular Pathology et al. v. Myriad Genetics,Inc., et. al can be found on the Supreme Court's website.

HUCKABEE A "JUSTIFIED" HOMOPHOBE?

The former governor (who's been called a "model" for Republicans on LGBT rights) doesn't like what he sees on TV

 VIDEO AVAILABLE

on "SALON"

Mike Huckabee: “we’re now even seeing television commercials portraying same-sex couples” (OH NO, THE APOCALYPSE  IS HERE--IDIOT!)

"Former Arkansas Governor, nutritionist and Capitol Offense frontman Mike Huckabee is speaking out against the attacks against homophobic people. He’s tired of homophobes being told that their views are, well, homophobic. And he’s tired of the homosexualist attack against heterosexuals. (OH DO WE ATTACK YOU?--WHERE ARE THE STATISTICS FOR "STRAIGHT BASHING, JERK-OFF?")

Huckabee spoke with Concerned Women for America head Penny Nance about his concerns on the radio on Monday.

The very thing that many people and I know CWA was a part of this, saying, this is why the legalization of same-sex marriage is going to be a much bigger issue than just saying we let people love whoever they want to love, that’s not the issue. (REALLY? IT'S VERY SIMPLE TO ME, EQUAILTY FOR ALL--ONE LAW--WHERE'S THE PROBLEM?)

Will it force businesses — of course everyone will say, oh no people still have their rights, but they don’t. And every fear that people had has in fact come true, that this is being forced in textbooks on how marriage is depicted (IT'S CALLED TRUTH, MAYBE YOU'RE UNFAMILIAR WITH IT BRO?)

We’re now even seeing television commercials portraying same-sex couples, that’s something I guess I didn’t expect to see anytime soon (YOU MEAN YOU HOPED YOU WOULDN'T SEE, A-HOLE!).

Huckabee is understandably distraught that he’d live to see the day when some people started to see LGBT people as equals. It is troubling. More and more people are losing their god-given right to discriminate

I’m not sure which commercials he’s talking about, since I haven’t seen too many featuring the gays. But Will and Grace was bad enough. Nor am I sure about the textbooks..."

RICK PERRY: LESS TESTING FOR STUDENTS-YAY !

Texas Standardized Tests: Gov. Perry Signs Law That Slashes High-Stakes Exams Requirements

(I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD CATCH MYSELF SAYING THIS BUT I AGREE WITH TEXAS & (WAIT FOR IT)--I AGREE WITH RICK PERRY.
I HAD HIGHLY DISAGREED WITH GEORGE W. BUSH WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EXCESS OF STANDARDIZED TESTS AND THE FAILED "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" DISASTER.
AGAINST SOME HEATED OPPOSITION PERRY IS A HERO HERE. I HOPE THIS IS A MUCH NEEDED TREND. WAKE THE "F" UP AMERICA, LET THE TEACHERS CREATE WHAT THE STUDENTS NEED NOT THOSE WITH THE POLITICAL POWER. WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO HAVE OUR HANDS TIED. EVERYDAY I AGREE MORE WITH THE CHARTER SCHOOL MODEL(S), AT LEAST ITS MUCH MORE COLLABORATIVE.
__________________________________________________
FROM "THE WASHINGTON POST" APRIL 14, 2013:
"But under No Child Left Behind, a significant number of schools did not see their test scores increase, and the federal government labeled them as “failing.” That led educators and political leaders to complain that the law’s requirements were unrealistic.
Since 2011, the Obama administration issued waivers to exempt 34 states and the District from some of the more onerous requirements of No Child Left Behind.
Still, the testing has continued.   (GO OBAMA!)

State spending on standardized testing grew from $552 million in 2001 to $1.7 billion in 2012, according to surveys performed by the Pew Center on the States and the Brookings Institution..."
___________________________________________________

ONE OF THE REASONS I STOPPED TEACHING WAS BECAUSE THE ART OF TEACHING WAS BEING CHIPPED AWAY SO RAPIDLY.

IN ITS PLACE WAS THE MANIC IDEALS OF OVERLOADING STUDENTS WITH STANDARDIZED TESTS. EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE TEACHERS, CONSTANTLY FELT THE FRUSTRATION; AND OUR HANDS WERE TIED!

THE PRINCIPALS HAD TO PRODUCE HIGH SCORES TO OFFER THE GOVERNMENT NUMBERS WHICH EQUALED FUNDING FOR THE DISTRICTS; HENCE THE INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS. THEY WOULD FALSIFY SCORES OUT OF FEAR. FEAR WAS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR WHEN IT CAME TO THIS ISSUE. IN MY OPINION, MOST REPUBLICANS BASE THEIR ELECTIONS & IDEALS ON FEAR. SCARE THE PUBLIC ENOUGH & THEY WILL AGREE TO ANYTHING. SO IT'S EVEN MORE SATISFYING THAT PERRY-A REPUBLICAN-HAS AGREED WITH THIS IDEA.

I  WOULD LOATHE THE DAYS WHEN WE HAD TO PREP THE KIDS--WHICH WAS BASICALLY ALL YEAR. THE WEEK OF TESTING HAD EVERYONE STRESSED OUT, SOME STUDENTS SUFFERED SERIOUS ANXIETY  ISSUES AND, AT TIMES,  WORSE EFFECTS DURING THE TESTING PERIOD.

ALTHOUGH MANY EDUCATORS, SUCH AS MYSELF, ASSURED THEM THAT WE DIDN'T CARE ABOUT "THOSE" TESTS SCORES, THEY WERE STILL BOMBARDED BY THE CLIMATE THE PRINCIPALS INSTILLED IN THE SCHOOL,

I CONSTANTLY REPEATED THAT I MEASURED THEIR SUCCESS BY HOW THEY WALKED INTO MY CLASS IN SEPTEMBER & THE PROGRESS THEY DEMONSTRATED THROUGH JUNE. I SAID THOSE STANDARDIZED TESTS MEASURE NOTHING, SINCE THE PEOPLE CREATING THEM DID NOT KNOW THEM LIKE WE DID. WE HAD TO INGRAIN HOW SUCCESSFUL THEY WERE, REGARDLESS OF THEIR FINAL SCORE (IT IS A FACT THAT HIGHLY INTELLIGENT PEOPLE CAN BE HORRIBLE TEST TAKERS. MANY OF THE TESTS--KEY WORD "STANDARDIZED" IMPLIES IT DOES NOT FOCUS ON THE INDIVIDUAL).

HOW IS THAT FAIR? THE INJUSTICE IS HIGHER  FOR INNER CITY SCHOOLS/STUDENTS WHO LACK ANY EXTRA SUPPORT THAN THOSE OFFERED SOLELY FROM 8-3PM.

Texas led the way in implementing standardized tests in the early 1990s. Now, the state appears to be leading the wave of backlash against those very same tests.

Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) signed a law Monday that significantly decreases the number of state tests students are required to take before graduating. Starting in fall 2014, students will have to complete only 5 tests, down from 15.

While House Bill 5 was unanimously passed by both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate, Perry’s feelings on the bill were previously unknown, reports the Austin-American Statesman. Despite pressures from pro-business groups concerned about students’ job readiness, Perry signed the bill into law, saying that it maintains “proper classroom rigor," according to the Associated Press.

The bill also reduces maximum hours students prepare for tests (from 90 down to 21), creates more flexible diploma plans and abolishes the rule that end-of-year tests count for 15 percent of a course's grade.

Education advocates are pleased with the final bill, according to local outlet KHOU-TV.

"House Bill 5 was a great step forward for public education because it marks a time where we can say we quit depending on tests to show us that schools are meeting students' needs," said Brock Gregg with the Association of Texas Professional Educators, per KHOU.

MORNING AFTER PILL FOR MINORS--WHATTA YOU THINK?

Feds drop 'morning-after pill' appeal

________________

(remember there are 2 forms of the plan B pill--only one is allowed to minors now)

________________

Do you want the gov't to tell you how to raise your children or does it make sense since they will otherwise deal with unwanted pregnancy & abortion? I know we were having a similar argument not that long ago about condom distribution & education for minors.

When I was teaching many 14 yr olds were having sex & saw first hand how irresponsible & sexually clueless they were with the consequences that brought. I'm glad I'm not a parent; nevertheless, I still care deeply about our future generation.

From Bill Mears, CNN

(Many developed countries require a prescription for oral contraceptives, including Canada and most of Europe. Other countries sell the pill without a prescription).

Judge: Morning-after pill for all ages

The FDA has asked the maker of the single-pill emergency contraceptive known as Plan B One-Step to submit a new request for over-the-counter approval, the letter states. The agency "will approve it without delay" once filed.
But the FDA won't allow girls to obtain a two-pill version of the drug, saying there is less safety data available on the use of the product by younger adolescents.

The Obama administration will allow minors to obtain one form of the emergency contraception known as the "morning-after pill," dropping its appeal of a judge's order requiring it to be sold over the counter.
U.S. District Judge Edward Korman had ruled in April that the government must allow over-the-counter sales, and a federal appeals court rejected the administration's challenge to that ruling last week. The administration had been criticized by some women's rights groups for trying to stop contraception sales to underage females.

In a Monday letter to Korman, Justice Department attorneys said the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services had agreed to make the single-pill version of the drug available "without age or point-of-sale restrictions."

"It is the government's understanding that this course of action fully complies with the Court's judgment in this action," the letter states. "Once the Court confirms that the government's understanding is correct, the government intends to file with the Circuit Court notice that it is voluntarily withdrawing its appeal in this matter."
Judge: Morning-after pill for all ages
The FDA has asked the maker of the single-pill emergency contraceptive known as Plan B One-Step to submit a new request for over-the-counter approval, the letter states. The agency "will approve it without delay" once filed.

The key ingredient in Plan B is the synthetic hormone levonorgestrel, which can prevent fertilization or prevent a fertilized egg from embedding in the uterus. Emergency contraceptives are intended for use within 72 hours after sex but are most effective if taken within 24 hours.

The FDA announced two years ago there would be no limits on over-the-counter sales of morning-after pills. But Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius unilaterally ordered the age and prescription restrictions, prompting lawsuits.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, praised the decision.

"After far too long of a delay, science has prevailed," said Murray, who called emergency contraception "an essential part of women's basic health care."
"Today's move by the administration means the safety and effectiveness of Plan B, not politics, will dictate access," she said.

And the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America said the decision "ends a nearly decade-long battle over lowering barriers to this important medication."

"Health experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics and many others agree that emergency contraception is safe and effective for women of all ages," Ilyse Hogue, president of the rights group, said in a statement hailing the move. "We're happy to see this long overdue victory for science over politics."

NO SPANISH AT WHOLE FOODS--WTF?

Whole Foods Market Rocky Mountain Region executive marketing coordinator said the company believes in “having a uniform form of communication” for a safe working environment. (SAFE????REALLY????IS SPANISH UNSAFE???)

“Therefore, our policy states that all English-speaking team members must speak English to customers and other team members while on the clock,” he said in a statement published by the Associated Press. “Team members are free to speak any language they would like during their breaks, meal periods and before and after work.” (OH GEE THANKS BUDDY!!!!)

That statement seemed to indicate that the employees were, indeed, suspended over language.  But another statement released by Whole Foods on Thursday reiterated that there was no “no foreign languages spoken” policy and called the AP’s original story “misleading,” and said the employees were disciplined for other reasons...

 WHAT WAS REPORTED:

Whole Foods is quickly working to smooth over a recent controversy over its policy on speaking languages other than English on the job. \Two employees at New Mexico store claimed their pay was docked for speaking to each other in Spanish while on breaks, but Whole Foods says they were reprimanded for rude behavior, not for Spanish.Various media outlets ran the story of two employees who claimed they were suspended after complaining that they couldn’t speak Spanish to each other while on the job, reports Newsmax. One of the employees said they wrote a letter after a meeting with a manager, who they say forbade them from speaking Spanish during work hours.

I DON'T BELIEVE EITHER SIDE SINCE I WASN'T THERE (IT WAS PROBABLY A THIRD MORE ACCURATE VERSION OF THE COMBINED SIDES) BUT I AM HIGHLY INSULTED AS A HISPANIC PERSON, WHO SHOPS AT "WHOLE FOODS", THAT THEY INSTILL SUCH  PREJUDICE.

(I ALSO REALIZED THAT SOME STORES MUST ENFORCE THIS POLICY MORE THAN OTHERS--FRIENDS OF MINE HAVE WORKED AT THE NYC "WHOLE FOODS" AND THEY EXPERIENCED THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE: SOME MEAN SPIRITED MALE WORKERS WOULD ONLY SPEAK SPANISH TO PURPOSELY EXCLUDE HIM-NOT AT ALL COOL EITHER!)

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND A REQUIREMENT TO SPEAK ENGLISH IN THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT SINCE IT HAPPENED IN NEW MEXICO; THERE ARE 972,204 HISPANICS LIVING THERE-THE NINTH LARGEST IN AMERICA. HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD KNOW ENOUGH ENGLISH TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CUSTOMERS. THAT'S FAIR!

TO ACTUALLY FORBID ANOTHER LANGUAGE WHEN ADDRESSING ANOTHER EMPLOYEE IS BULLSHIT?

MAYBE THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE NAME TO "WHOLIER (HOLIER)-THAN-THOU-FOODS"
______________________________________________________

IN CASE NO ONE HAS TOLD WHOLE FOODS
:
A. MANY HISPANICS SHOP & WORK AT WHOLE FOOD

B. ENGLISH IS NOT--I REPEAT NOT THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES-IT'S ONLY THE ACCEPTED FOR POLICY PURPOSES BUT IT'S NEVER BEEN A LAW (IF ANYTHING SPANISH SHOULD BE THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, SPAIN SETTLED MOST OF THE US FIRST. AT THE RATE OF HISPANICS RISING IN THE USA, IT MAY BE...DEAL WITH IT!)

C. YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW, IT'S BLATANT DISCRIMINATION.(ASK THE ACLU)

D. SPANISH IS SPOKEN BY OVER 30% -SOME SAY UPTO 47%-OF PEOPLE IN THE US

E. CHANGE YOUR POLICY OR RISK LOSING CUSTOMERS LIKE MYSELF-IF YOU EVEN CARE

MICHELLE OBAMA & A GAME CHANGER FOR LGBTQ?

Lesbian activist kicked out of fundraiser for disrupting First Lady’s speech

WASHINGTON — First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday threatened to walk out on a private Democratic fundraiser after a lesbian activist repeatedly interrupted her speech to demand that President Obama sign an executive order to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ellen Sturtz, 56, a member of GetEqual — a extremist group that advocates for LGBT equality through confrontational direct action — was escorted out of the event, which was being held at a private residence in northwest Washington.

According to the White House, Mrs. Obama “left the lectern” and confronted Sturtz, telling her, “One of the things that I don’t do well is this,” she said to applause from most of the guests. “Do you understand?”

The pool press report quoted Mrs. Obama as saying, “Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving. You all decide. You have one choice.”

The White House told LGBTQ Nation that after the First Lady threatened to leave, the audience asked her to remain and Sturtz was instead escorted out of the room.

Sturtz told The Washington Post that she was stunned by Mrs. Obama’s response.

“She came right down in my face,” Sturtz said. “I was taken aback.”Sturtz said paid $500 to attend the fundraiser as part of a scheme by GetEqual to gain the President’s attention.

AND SHE GOT IT!!!

I GET  THE APPARENT DISRESPECT & LACK OF DECORUM TO OUR WONDERFUL FIRST LADY AND NO ONE ADORES MICHELLE OBAMA MORE THAN I DO BUT THIS WAS BIGGER THEN HER, OR YOU OR ME. THIS IS A HISTORICAL  CRY FOR FREEDOM & LIBERTY FOR TODAY & GENERATIONS TO COME.

HISTORY SHOWS THAT THOSE WILLING TO PUT THEIR REPUTATIONS ON THE LINE AND STAND UP--I MEAN REALLY STAND UP AND HAVE THE "COJONES" TO MAKE A LIFE ALTERING STATEMENT ON ISSUES CONCERNING THE GREATER GOOD USUALLY GET PRAISED MUCH LATER WHEN HISTORY SEES THE COURAGE IT TAKES TO BE VOCAL & GET THE SAID ISSUES ATTENTION; HERE BEING LGBTQ RIGHTS.

I APPLAUD YOU ELLEN STURTZ FOR BEING THE VOICE OF SO MANY OF US. NOT EVERY LGBTQ PERSON NEEDS TO AGREE WITH ME BUT IT'S THIS KIND OF RADICAL STANCE THAT STARTS A DIALOGUE-BRAVA!

WE NEED TO BE VISIBLE EVERYWHERE AT THE RISK OF NOT BEING LIKED. WERE PIONEERS SUCH AS HARVEY MILK OR LARRY KRAMER LIKED AT FIRST BY THE STAUS QUO? OF COURSE FREAKIN' NOT!

WE CANNOT SIT BY & WAIT FOR POLITICIANS OR SINGLE STATE LAWS TO DECIDE WHAT WE SO RIGHTLY DESERVE FROM OUR CONSTITUTION!

LGBTQ MARRIAGE EQUAILTY  HAS TO A FEDERAL LAW. THE SUPREME COURT MUST MAKE IT SO-SOONER BETTER THAN LATER!

NOW! NOW! NOW! WE GOTTA FIGHT HARDER  MY LGBTQ BROTHERS & SISTERS.

Chrysler said it would not conduct a safety recall to fix fuel leaks on its Jeep models after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requested that the company recall 2.7 million vehicles.

NHTSA sent Chrysler a 13-page report Monday detailing why the automaker's fuel tank design on 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Jeep Libertys was flawed, citing fire-related fatalities in these vehicles dating back to 1996.

"We believe NHTSA’s initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the agency to resolve this disagreement," the company said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

"The U.S. government today called for a major recall of nearly 3 million Chrysler sport utility vehicles based on what its experts say is a deadly fire hazard that has left an estimated 51 people dead.

“This will be the biggest recall [in terms of impact] since the Ford Pinto,” said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, which requested a U.S. probe into the SUVs in 2010.

The automaker is refusing, however, saying that its vehicles are safe and not defective.

The government says that initial findings show a safety defect in older model Jeeps — the Jeep Grand Cherokee from 1993 to 2004, and the Jeep Liberty 2002 to 2007.

The government also says the fuel tanks are vulnerable to rupture in rear-end collisions.

According to the government, the problem is the fuel tank location, just behind the rear axle and slightly below the bumper. In later models of the Grand Cherokee and Liberty — in 2005 and ’07, respectively — the tank was moved but Chrysler said it was for design reasons..."

ANTI-GAY RALLY (MAY 20, 2013) IN VAIN?? ATTACKS LATER -AGAIN

Thousands Rally in NYC in a Defiant and Spirited Response to Anti-Gay Murder (by "GAY MARRIAGE USA")

(update (may 28, 2013: now 9 attacks--one last sat-we gotta do something folks!)

"An estimated crowd of more than two thousand this evening marched and rallied in New York City in response to a spate of anti-gay crimes in Manhattan in recent weeks.

The wave of anti-gay violence came to a head on Saturday May 18th with the murder of Marc Carson who was shot dead in Greenwhich Vilage. The suspect in that fatal incident has been charged with a hate crime.

Members of the LGBT community and their allies assembled outside the LGBT Center of NYC on West 13th Street.

By the time the march began the crowd had swelled to well beyond initial
expectations.

Led by representatives of the LGBT Center, the Anti-Violence Project, relatives of Marc Cason, religious leaders, Edie Windsor (DOMA plaintiff), and elected officials, the group marched towards the scene of Carson’s death at West 8th Street and 6th Avenue.

Participants waved signs and chanted along the march route. A large number of police were in attendance.

Inspiring and upliftying speeches were given by representatives form a range of LGBT organizations and other community groups. The aunt of Marc Arson spoke on behalf of Marc’s family and accepted the condolences offered by those in attendance. Leaders from LGBT affirming churches provided input from a religious perspective. Nick Porto and Kevin Atkins, attacked in an unsolved anti-gay assault on May 5th, also spoke.

Much to the irritation of a number of rally attendees, no elected official spoke in relation to the recent rise in anti-gay violence in the city. The event ended with a minute’s silence to honor the death of Marc Carson..."

THEN THIS HAPPENS???? UNBELIEVABLE

A gay couple was attacked early Tuesday in SoHo and a man was beaten in the East Village, hours after thousands marched to protest the killing of a gay man and several other bias attacks that have shaken the community, officials said.

Mayor Bloomberg said at a news conference Tuesday that "New York City has zero tolerance for intolerance."

"We are a place that celebrates diversity ... hate crimes like these are an offense against all we stand for as a city, and we will do everything possible to stop them," Bloomberg added.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the two men in the SoHo attack were walking on Broadway between Prince and Houston streets at about 5 a.m. when two men started yelling anti-gay remarks in English and Spanish. The victims, 41 and 42, are Hispanic.

The men were both punched, and one suffered an eye injury, sources said.

TODAY (MAY 22, 2013) I FIND OUT ONE MORE VIOLENT, HOMOPHOBIC BASHING IN THE EAST VILLAGE :Gornell Roman was charged Wednesday with assault and aggravated harassment after a hate crime against former Philadelphia promoter Dan Contarino.  The attack was one of two hate crimes authorities announced Tuesday following the killing of a gay man over the weekend.

HIV VIRUS DISAPPERS IN 2 YR. OLD

Researchers: Toddler cured of HIV

(CNN) --" It's a potential game changer in the fight against HIV, and doctors say it happened almost by accident.

A baby with the virus that causes AIDS was given high doses of three antiretroviral drugs within 30 hours of her birth. Doctors knew the mother was HIV positive and administered the drugs in hopes of controlling the virus.

Two years later, there is no evidence of HIV in the child's blood.

The Mississippi girl is the first child to be "functionally cured" of HIV, researchers announced Sunday. They said they believe early intervention with the antiretroviral drugs was key to the outcome.

A "functional cure" is when the presence of the virus is so small, lifelong treatment is not necessary and standard clinical tests cannot detect the virus in the blood..."

"MOMATH MUSEUM" (NYC)THE MUSEUM OF MATH

MO ROCCA JUST HAD AN INTERESTING SEGMENT ON  THE CBS  NEWS SHOW, "SUNDAY MORNING",  REGARDING THE FIRST EVER MUSEUM DEDICATED TO MATH--IN NYC-OF COURSE-11 EAST 26TH STREET , TO BE EXACT.

I SEE IT AS A COUNTER MUSEUM TO  JERSEY CITY'S  Liberty Science CenterA field trip to Liberty Science Center helps reinforce in-classroom learning for all ages. ... Liberty State Park 222 Jersey City Boulevard Jersey City, NJ 07305

(THERE'S EVEN A MUSEUM IN NYC-"MOSEX"-DEDICATED TO SEX NOT FAR AWAY--BUT I DIGRESS)

 "MOMATH MUSEUM":

"MoMath is not what you might expect. At first you might not even guess its subject. There are a few giveaways, particularly if you recognize the symbol for pi on the door or discover the pentagonal sinks in the bathrooms.

But what is that cylinder constructed of plastic tubes stretching toward the ceiling with a seat inside (“Hyper Hyperboloid”)? Or that transparent wagon that slips along multicolored acorns in a trough (“Coaster Rollers”)? Or a tricycle with three square wheels, each of a different size, rolling along a bumpy circular track (“Square-Wheeled Trike”)?

And what is that screen on which you paint electronic designs with a brush (“Polypaint”)? The two adjustable sloping paths on which you race objects (“Tracks of Galileo”)? The pixelated illuminated floor that responds to your movements (“Math Square”)?

This is not a museum, you might think, it is a high-tech playground, some 19,000 square feet with 30 attractions on two floors. I stand in front of a screen, and I see myself as a tree sprouting branches of mini-me’s (“Human Tree”). I cover a wall with interlocking monkeys (“Tesselation Station”). I dip a paint roller into water and map footprints on a blackboard (“Water Frieze”). Child’s play or something else?"... (THE NY TIMES ARTICLE)

HERE'S THE CAVEAT, ACCORDING TO THE TIMES: "The problem is that we don’t get enough guidance to be led deeper. The exhibits offer touch screens that can display three different explanations, the appropriate level sensed from a coded card provided each visitor. But these explanations are the museum’s weakest part. The most basic are often stilted or overly elaborate; the most advanced, not sufficiently suggestive.."
