NO SPANISH AT WHOLE FOODS--WTF?
Whole Foods Market Rocky Mountain Region executive marketing coordinator said the company believes in “having a uniform form of communication” for a safe working environment. (SAFE????REALLY????IS SPANISH UNSAFE???)
“Therefore, our policy states that all English-speaking team members must speak English to customers and other team members while on the clock,” he said in a statement published by the Associated Press. “Team members are free to speak any language they would like during their breaks, meal periods and before and after work.” (OH GEE THANKS BUDDY!!!!)
That statement seemed to indicate that the employees were, indeed, suspended over language. But another statement released by Whole Foods on Thursday reiterated that there was no “no foreign languages spoken” policy and called the AP’s original story “misleading,” and said the employees were disciplined for other reasons...
WHAT WAS REPORTED:
I DON'T BELIEVE EITHER SIDE SINCE I WASN'T THERE (IT WAS PROBABLY A THIRD MORE ACCURATE VERSION OF THE COMBINED SIDES) BUT I AM HIGHLY INSULTED AS A HISPANIC PERSON, WHO SHOPS AT "WHOLE FOODS", THAT THEY INSTILL SUCH PREJUDICE.
(I ALSO REALIZED THAT SOME STORES MUST ENFORCE THIS POLICY MORE THAN OTHERS--FRIENDS OF MINE HAVE WORKED AT THE NYC "WHOLE FOODS" AND THEY EXPERIENCED THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE: SOME MEAN SPIRITED MALE WORKERS WOULD ONLY SPEAK SPANISH TO PURPOSELY EXCLUDE HIM-NOT AT ALL COOL EITHER!)
I CAN'T UNDERSTAND A REQUIREMENT TO SPEAK ENGLISH IN THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT SINCE IT HAPPENED IN NEW MEXICO; THERE ARE 972,204 HISPANICS LIVING THERE-THE NINTH LARGEST IN AMERICA. HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD KNOW ENOUGH ENGLISH TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CUSTOMERS. THAT'S FAIR!
TO ACTUALLY FORBID ANOTHER LANGUAGE WHEN ADDRESSING ANOTHER EMPLOYEE IS BULLSHIT?
MAYBE THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE NAME TO "WHOLIER (HOLIER)-THAN-THOU-FOODS"

IN CASE NO ONE HAS TOLD WHOLE FOODS
:
A. MANY HISPANICS SHOP & WORK AT WHOLE FOOD
B. ENGLISH IS NOT--I REPEAT NOT THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES-IT'S ONLY THE ACCEPTED FOR POLICY PURPOSES BUT IT'S NEVER BEEN A LAW (IF ANYTHING SPANISH SHOULD BE THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, SPAIN SETTLED MOST OF THE US FIRST. AT THE RATE OF HISPANICS RISING IN THE USA, IT MAY BE...DEAL WITH IT!)
C. YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW, IT'S BLATANT DISCRIMINATION.(ASK THE ACLU)
D. SPANISH IS SPOKEN BY OVER 30% -SOME SAY UPTO 47%-OF PEOPLE IN THE US
E. CHANGE YOUR POLICY OR RISK LOSING CUSTOMERS LIKE MYSELF-IF YOU EVEN CARE
