One of them, Dr. William
Foege, helped lead the effort to eradicate smallpox, saving millions of
lives. Madeleine Albright was the first woman to serve as U.S. Secretary
of State, and Toni Morrison was the first African-American women to win
a Nobel Prize.
Others who stood calmly
while Obama placed the medal around their necks included
singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, wearing dark glasses indoors and never
smiling; civil rights enforcer John Doar; former U.S. Supreme Court
Justice John Paul Stevens; worker and women's advocate Dolores Huerta;
former University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt, and
former astronaut and U.S. Sen. John Glenn..."
( a big oops on Obama's part when he paid tribute to Jan Karski, the former Polish officer who
escaped Nazi imprisonment in World War II and provided firsthand
accounts to the Western Allies of atrocities. Karski received the award
posthumously.
The president's use of the term "Polish death camp," rather than Nazi death camp sparked lots of outrage in Poland. At least Obama's verbal mistakes are few and far between; unlike our last president who was making them consistently. Ah, what weapons of mass destruction?)
AND BOB DYLAN:
I never cared for Dylan
and as an honoree pales in comparison , to me, with the others receiving
this honor, yet he's ambivalent , attention getting scowl attitude is
annoying & disrespectful.
If it's such an effort, dude, don't accept it, stay home & make that screeching cat call you call singing!
