KING MAKES IT CLEAR IT IS A SEQUEL OF HIS BOOK NOT THE MOVIE (CHANGES WERE OBVIOUSLY MADE FOR FILMIC & DIRECTOR CHOICES).
Danny Torrance is no longer a child (he who dealt with his father's madness and deadly mallet).
Danny is now a middle-aged loner working at a hospice.
According to King, "He uses his innate supernatural powers to ease the suffering of the dying".
